Swaffham Primary students enjoy the magic of storytelling, virtually

To celebrate National Storytelling Week which took place last week, stories were told to pupils at Heartwood CE VC Primary and Nursery School in Swaffham.

A virtual storytelling event hosted by homebuilders Barratt Homes.

The school is based near Barratt Homes’ new Ceres Rise development, and the event is another part of the construction company’s outreach to the local community.

Students were invited to the session for a morning of magical storytelling, hosted over Zoom by experienced storyteller Richard York, who created a bespoke experience for grades 2-4 classes.

Mr. York is a traditional storyteller, multi-instrumental musician and composer who brings stories to life at numerous events, schools, museums and heritage sites in a wide range of counties.

Mr York said: “It was a pleasure to work with the school to celebrate National Storytelling Week.

“Traditional storytelling can bring so much to people of all ages, as well as children, and these days that’s more important than ever.

“Their responses show how the magic of these stories, often passed down over hundreds of years, can still come to fruition despite the limitation of having to work online rather than the shared experience of being in the room together.

“Thank you to Barratt Homes for providing this opportunity, and to the school for being so cooperative.”

National Storytelling Week, an annual event organized by the Society for Storytelling, is celebrated by people of all ages and aims to bring stories new and old to life.

Rebecca Starman, Vice-Principal of Heartwood CE VC Elementary and Preschool, said, “The children really enjoyed the engaging storytelling sessions with Richard. We really captivated the audience throughout the school.

“Thank you Barratt Homes for enriching our school’s National Storytelling Week celebrations.”

Children were able to experience how oral storytelling has allowed stories to survive and evolve over thousands of years and across continents.
