Bring your lunch to the Center for Stories pop-up in the Hay Street Mall and join skilled storytellers Cathy Henkel and Anju Sivarajah as they share true and personal stories about death and dying.
Dr. Cathy Henkel is the Director of the WA Screen Academy at ECU and has over 30 years of experience as a director, screenwriter and producer of documentaries. Her most recent film, Laura’s Choice, is a documentary about her mother’s decision to end her life on her own terms, and screened on ABC in 2021 and is currently on iView. Cathy’s story concerns a night when, as a nineteen-year-old recently escaped from South Africa, she made a life-changing decision in a Swiss alpine village.
Anju Sivarajah is a proud Sri Lankan woman; having emigrated to Australia as a child. She has worked tirelessly in the social services sector for the past 24 years, tackling social disadvantage on the front lines for indigenous, refugee and migrant communities nationally and locally. She has extensive experience in addressing family and domestic violence, mental health, homelessness, racism, reconciliation and belonging. She has developed strong bonds with many diverse people across Perth which has enabled her to engage with the BIPOC communities in Perth. Anju currently works in high schools as an educational assistant. Anju’s greatest achievement to date is her 12-year-old daughter, who she cares about on a daily basis but also draws a lot of inspiration from.
